Purpose and Use of "Acting" Versus "Interim" Appointments

Acting Appointment

An ACTING appointment is defined as a position filled on a temporary basis to replace a regular unclassified employee on leave.   The expectation is that the regular employee will be returning to his/her regular position in the future. When creating acting positions in the online recruitment system, departments must use the “Academic Wage” position title.  All “acting” appointments are academic wage appointments, as they are temporary, short-term appointments.

Acting appointments must be approved by the BC HR Manager.

Interim Appointment

An INTERIM appointment is defined as a position filled on a temporary basis while a search is being conducted, or a department/unit reorganization is taking place.

When appointing someone to an Interim position through a non-competitive process, the appointment must be approved by the Office of Equity & Inclusion (OEI) (waiver of search).  In this situation, departments are encouraged to contact OEI (Affirmative.Action@oregonstate.edu) to discuss their request before submitting a “fill” action through the online recruitment system.

When appointing someone to an Interim position through a competitive process, the Initiator must submit a competitive “fill” action through the online recruitment system to begin the recruitment and selection process.
